DEAD LETTER OFFICE: WINDOUT

'This is one of our earliest songs, written in the summer of 1980.
We recorded it for our second album. In retrospect, I think that it would
have fit on Reckoning very well, but at the time we decided not to include
it.  From a soundtrack that shall remain nameless'
-Peter Buck

Well, the nameless soundtrack is Bachelor Party with Tom Hanks.  I can't really agree that this would have fit well on Reckoning, but it's a great song.  The lyrics to this one are pretty much indiscernible.   In earlier recordings he's saying: "He watches gonna knock, are you really gonna rock."  Is this a song about synchronizing watches?  Personified watches?  Does it matter?  No.  This became a great up-tempo filler song in subsequent years.

WINDOUT
Windout, if you're out of the wind
Windout, if you're ready to spin
Windout, if you're young and rent

Yeah, tick tock, it's tight o'clock
The watches gonna knock, can you really go?

So find out, if you're ready to spin
Find out, if you're out of the wind
Windout, if you're out of sync

Spin tick tock, it's tight o'clock
The watches gonna knock, can you really go?

Windin’ up

To no doubt, that you're feeling fine
No doubt, that you're out of mind
No doubt, that you're young and rent

Windout, if you're ready to spin
Find out, if you're young and rent
Windout, if you're out on a bend
If you're young and bent

Yeah, tick tock tight o’clock, my man
The watches gonna knock, can you really go?

Windout (windout)
Find out (find out)
No doubt (no doubt)
Windout (windout)
Find out (find out)
No doubt (no doubt)

Windout, windout, windout

This song eventually turned into 9-9, but almost earned a place in its own right.  Well, it ended up on DLO, so I guess it did earn a place.  Just good old fashioned Bucking around on this one ... have fun bending around the D chord formation.
