DEAD LETTER OFFICE: THERE SHE GOES AGAIN

Okay, so I'm not the biggest Velvet Underground fan in the world, but for some reason it's a band that all the members of R.E.M. can get behind.  There are 3 VU covers on Dead Letter Office.  This is the first.  It was the B-Side for Radio Free Europe back when it was released.

'One of several Velvet Underground songs that we've recorded.  It was recorded
live to two track with Mitch Easter playing acoustic guitar into the same mic as
myself.  I remember that I had to step forward to play the solo, just like Bill Monroe.
Outtake from Murmur.'   -Peter Buck

The opening guitar bit is taken directly from the song 'Hitch-Hike' by Marvin Gaye.  Later covered by the Rolling Stones and Frank Zappa.  Bill Monroe is of course the 'Father of Bluegrass' at least in the recording sense.
R.E.M. definitely takes some liberties with the song and the song's protagonist by just changing a couple of words.  The result is simpler and clearer, but why do we hate this woman?  Or why had we "better hit her?"  Is this song just bad advice from a friend, someone starting a rumor?  Or the most misogynistic song ever written?

THERE SHE GOES AGAIN
There she goes again
(There she goes)
She's out on the street again
(There she goes)
She's down on her knees my friend
(There she goes)
Won't have to ask her please again
(There she goes)

Look in real close there's no tears in her eyes
You know she won't make it (with) just any guy
What can you do?

(There she goes)
See her walking down the street
(There she goes)
With lying friends she's gonna meet
(There she goes)
Better hit her

There she goes again
(There she goes)
She's out on the street again
(There she goes)
She's down on her knees my friend
(There she goes)
Don't have to ask her please again

Look in real close there's no tears in her eyes
You know she won't make it, just any guy
What can you do?

(There she goes)
See her walking down the street
(There she goes)
With lying friends she's gonna meet
(There she goes)
Better hit her

Look in real close there's no tears in her eyes
You know she won't make it, just any guy
What can you do?

(There she goes)
See her walking down the street
(There she goes)
With lying friends she's gonna meet
(There she goes)
Better hit her

Like Crazy, this song is pretty faithful to the original.  It's recorded cleaner and the solo plays up an octave, and the ending doesn't pick up the pace, but it's clearly the same song.  With the lead play a little with sliding the ring finger from 11 to 12 ... sounds cool ...
