GREEN: TURN YOU INSIDE-OUT

This track definitely encapsulates the less is more theory of the band.  Instead of repetitive verses there is really only one and there are only 5 chords in the song.  It is clear that this song was written and produced to be an arena song, it's loud, brash, and easy to play, remember, and sing along to.  In Tourfilm, Stipe goes to the megaphone and blasts the chorus.  He would dedicate the song to the Exxon Corporation before performing as this was soon after the Alaskan Oil Spill.  The song is not incredibly easy to understand, but I am surprised at all of the incorrect lyrics circulating around the web.  The only question mark I have here is where he has two vocal lines and on one of them he wants to put an 'r' in the word tool.  I have written this word as 'truth' because it fits, but it's just like the band to leave a vocal recording error in to give the song just a little bit more flavor.

TURN YOU INSIDE-OUT

Divide your cultured pearls and paste
I’m looking for to lay waste
Of all the things I cannot taste
And this is not the racy race
They spoke loud

I believe in what you do
I believe in watching you
It’s what you do
I believe in what you do
I believe in watching you

I could turn you inside out
What I choose not to do
I could turn you inside out
What I choose not to do

Given the choice
Giving my heart
Given the truth (tool)
Given the word
Given the tears

I believe in what you do
I believe in watching you
It’s what you do
I believe in what you do
I believe in watching you
I believe in what you do
I believe in watching you
I … I … I … I, I, I

I could turn you inside-out
What I choose not to do
I could turn you inside-out
What I choose not to do

I believe in what you do
I believe in watching you
Given the choice
Giving my heart
I believe in what you do
I believe in watching you
Given the tool
I believe in what you do
Given the word
I believe in watching you
Given the tears
I believe in what you do
I believe in watching you

I could … I …

I could turn you inside-out
What I choose not to do
I could turn you inside-out
What I choose not to do

Given the choice
Giving my heart
Given the tool
Given the word
Given the tears
Given the tears
Given the tears
Given the choice
Given the choice
Given the choice
Given the choice

The guitar line here is based off of the Buck B chord from Harborcoat.  This chord makes a similar appearance down the line in 'Discoverer,' so much so that from now on fans probably won't know what song the band is playing until the drums or second guitar kick in.  Perhaps that is on purpose.  Or, maybe the band is sick of 'Inside-Out' and want a similar rocker live.  When and if they play live again.  I'm guessing one more album.
The guitar line is fairly free and relies on distortion to carry the wave of sound.  This is another one of those songs where it's easy to blend the bass and guitar lines together.  Buck does walk down at times in the verse, but that job is mostly left to Mills.  When in doubt, just hit that A/D chord and let it ring!

BARNABY WILDE: Side 2 of Chronic Town Live

Well, I'm finally getting around to posting the rest of the EP Chronic Town.  1,000,000 and Stumble are a little bit rough and there are some interesting lyric interps by my friend Stuart, but overall it's good stuff.  My next show is August 16, 2011 at The National Underground in NYC ...

GREEN: ORANGE CRUSH

I've always kind of had a take it or leave it kind of attitude with this song.  Okay, it rocks!  It was pretty much their first huge hit reaching #1 on the modern rock charts.  But, it's a lot shorter than it feels and that's not great ... it's not really that interesting.  Don't get me wrong, I like the song, just don't get me to write an essay about it.
Lyrically it's down and dirty R.E.M. with a repetitive verse and fierce chorus.  What is under explored is the dialogue in the middle which gives us a taste of the stream of consciousness, poetic Stipe.  A couple of notes about my differences to what is out there ... first, there is a lead vocal strip on YouTube that sounds like what I have below which makes little to no sense. All of this is moot as Michael was singing through a megaphone which was distorting his vocals even more than usual. Second, I don't think he is saying anything above trying to create a soundscape that fits the song and yet he pretty clearly says the same thing each chorus. Even after multiple listens I have no idea. Below will get you close to how the vocals 'actually sound.' On the demo he's altering the words every verse just a bit and on the studio recording he has the megaphone to distort a little. Also on the recent Perfect Square DVD, he doesn't seem to be saying blood as much as force ... so ... really what I'm saying is warble away!

ORANGE CRUSH

Follow me, don’t follow me
I’ve got my spine, I’ve got my orange crush
Collar me, don’t collar me
I’ve got my spine, I’ve got my orange crush
We are agents of the free
I’ve had my fun and now it’s time to
Serve your conscience overseas
(Over me, not over me)
Coming in fast, over me

Follow me, don’t follow me
I’ve got my spine, I’ve got my orange crush
Collar me, don’t collar me
I’ve got my spine, I’ve got my orange crush
We are agents of the free
I’ve had my fun and now it’s time to
Serve your conscience overseas
(Over me, not over me)
Coming in fast, over me

High on the roost (to)
Paid in full
Now the lies chimerts race tonight
(Now this, race)
Comin’ into your home

(1,2,3,4)
(Let’s move it!)
We would circle and we circled, and circled the sovereign center
centered on the pavement stacked up all the trucks jacked up and
our wheels slush and orange crush in pocket a wall in this here county
hell in green county the tri-county area now with those standin, I was the king of the county
all these girls, shit, whirlybirds I headed for, I had this life for, I knew it all I knew every back
road and every friday night we would meet down there right on back

Follow me, don’t follow me
I’ve got my spine, I’ve got my orange crush
Collar me, don’t collar me
I’ve got my spine, I’ve got my orange crush
We are agents of the free
I’ve had my fun but now it’s time to
Serve your conscience overseas
(Over me, not over me)
Coming in fast, over me

High on the roost, to (to)
Paid in full
And still the lies chimerts race tonight
Comin’ into your home

High on the roost
Paid in full
Now the lies chimerts race tonight
Comin’ into your home

Here's the thing, live these days, this song is much different.  When you play the album version side by side with live stuff, the album tab is downright boring.  He does a lot more stuff on the high frets during the verse nowadays.  It's pretty easy to figure out.  Oh, and a lot of people place harmonics on their middle bridge, but he's just using a cool effect.  However, the harmonics do sound pretty cool ...
