MURMUR: CATAPULT

Have you noticed a lot of childhood imagery yet?  No?  Well, here's some.  And it comes back on Sitting Still and quite a bit in Reckoning and Life's Rich Pageant.  There's definitely an innocence to Michael Stipe's lyrics and if you think about it, some of our clearest and happiest memories are from childhood.  Here, Stipe defines a number of the emotions of growing up and it's not all peaches and sunshine.  The line "Coward in a hole" is usually notated as "Cowered in a hole," but I like the options so much that I posted the former here, it makes more sense to demand that a coward open their mouth.  Obviously it could be sung either way.  I still think of this song as the beginning of side 2, it's still strange to not hear a pause for the cassette to switch sides when I listen to the album digitally.

CATAPULT
Oooh, when we were little boys
Oooh, when we were little girls
It’s 9 o’clock, don’t try to turn it off
Coward in a hole, open your mouth and question

Did we miss anything?
Did we miss anything?
Did we miss anything?
Did we miss anything?

Catapult

Catapult
Catapult
(catapult)
Catapult

Oooh, when we were little boys
Oooh, when we were little girls
It’s 9 o’clock, don’t try to turn it off
Coward in a hole, open your mouth
We in step in hand
Your mother remembers this
Hear the howl of the road, the question

Did we miss anything?
Did we miss anything?
Did we miss anything?
Did we miss anything?

Catapult

Catapult
Catapult
(catapult)
Catapult

The porch could be darker
The porch could be darker

Catapult

Oooh, when we were little boys
Oooh, when we were little girls
It’s 9 o’clock, don’t try to turn it off
Coward in a hole, open your mouth
We in step in hand
Your mother remembers this
Hear the howl of the road, the question

Did we miss anything?
Did we miss anything?
Did we miss anything?
Did we miss anything?

This song is actually pretty involved.  The verse changes in the second verse, there are 2 bridges and almost all of the song is picked with no chords except for A and D.  That's what makes it fun!
